Did You Know? 10 Footloose Fun Facts

Think you know it all when it comes to this classic 80s flick? Here’s a quick crash course on one of the most famous musical rom-drams to ever grace the silver screen: Footloose! We’re talking the OG Footloose released in theaters in 1984. These fun facts will make you want to listen to Kenny Loggins “Footloose.” I’m guilty of it…

  1.  Footloose is based on real events that took place in the small community of Elmore City, Oklahoma where dancing was banned for 90 years until a group of high school teenagers brought it back.
  2. Footloose has two taglines:
    1.  “The music is on his side.”
    2.  “He’s a big city kid in a small town. They said he’d never win. He knew he had to.”
  3. The scenes where Chris Penn learns to dance were purposely added to the script because he really didn’t know how to dance!

  4. Movie mom math: Dianne Wiest is only 9 years older than her onscreen daughter Lori Singer.
  5. She could have taught Kevin Bacon how to Vogue. Did you know? Madonna auditioned for the role of Ariel.

  6. B.C.D (Before Carrie Diaries), Sarah Jessica Parker plays Ariel’s friend Rusty.
  7. The total budget for the production was 7.5 million dollars. Nowadays, that is nada!
  8. To get into his role as high-schooler, Ren MacCormack, 24-year-old Bacon attended Payson Utah High School.
  9. Loggins alert! Over 150 different pairs of dancing feet were filmed for the opening credit sequence, including “Footloose” singer Kenny Loggins’ tapping tootsies in the gold shoes.
  10. The movie was adapted into a Broadway Musical which opened on October 22, 1998 at the Richard Rogers Theater, running for 709 performances. By no surprise, it was nominated for four Tony Awards!
