Shaken, Not Stirred: The Original James Bond Martini

“I never have more than one drink before dinner. But I do like that one to be large and very strong and very cold and very well made.” – James Bond

A discerning spy like 007 is particular about everything, including his drink order. We all know he likes his martinis shaken, not stirred, but now it’s time to learn how to make them too.

Vesper Martini

  • 3 ounces gin
  • 1 ounce vodka
  • 1/2 ounce Lillet Blanc

Per Bond’s instructions, shake your ingredients well in a cocktail shaker. 007 specifies shaking over cracked ice, but we can’t all be that fancy, so any old ice will do just fine. Strain and serve in a martini glass (Bond says a champagne goblet, but we beg to differ) with a lemon peel and enjoy.

This drink packs a punch, so proceed with caution… Even Bond only ever orders one, at least before dinner!

Here’s a bonus tidbit for the true 007 fanatics – Bond does not specify the ingredients and prep for his cocktail of choice until Casino Royale.
