You may think that 50 Shades of Grey was the first foray into freaky sex in movies… let me rephrase… you may think that 50 Shades of Grey was the first raunchy film that people actually went to see in a movie theater and willingly sat next to people they knew but it’s not true.
35 years before housewives were whispering “Mr. Grey will see you now” in their sleep, they were fantasizing about Dick. Dick Gere. Ok fine, Richard Gere.
American Gigolo was one of the first movies that showed women being just as interested in sex as men. So interested, in fact, that they were willing to pay top dollar for it. Amazing historical changes were happening in the late 70s and American Gigolo premiered at the perfect time – Gloria Steinem stated that women “are becoming the men we wanted to marry,” the fight for equality for women was on the frontline of debates, and women were finally starting to gain control over their own sex lives and bodies – and then Richard Gere (as Julian, the male prostitute with a heart of gold) shows up with his shirt off and puppy dog eyes.
Man, I love the 80s.
Oh, did I mention sweet Julian is framed for murder? I’m sorry, I blacked out after he took off his pants but there actually is a phenomenal thriller story line in there too! Leave the money on the dresser and go watch American Gigolo, now playing on EPIX and EPIX.com.
